1st, 2nd, & 3rd John: Living in the Light is fresh paraphrase of John’s three short letters and was created to make John’s tender, while unflinchingly direct, messages truly accessible. Christians with only the briefest understanding of scripture should now be able to read the letters with the ease and clarity of a communiqué from a cherished relative or dear friend.
John’s original thought progression, syntax, and style are so foreign to us today that, in our English translations (whether old or new), we must pore diligently over each verse in an effort to extract meaning. In doing so, we lose the simple message of the letters as whole works – a message which should guide our every step as we seek to digest the individual pieces. This loss of the central message has led to what seem to be grave misinterpretations of the book. John’s letters, especially the first one, are books which reassure us of the security of our eternal relationship with God based on faith alone, yet simultaneously confront us with the importance of godly living.
